Configuring Authentication for Sending Mail

If you are using one of Red River's nationwide access numbers or another Internet Service Provider (ISP) to connect to the Internet, you must enable Authentication on your computer in order to send email through our mail server. This will allow you to continue to send mail through our mail server no matter how you access the Internet.


Basic Settings
  • Use port 587 instead of port 25.
  • Enable SMTP Authentication
Instructions for Outlook Express and Windows Mail
  • Click Tools at the top of your email, then click Accounts.
  • Double-click on your Red River email account.
  • Click on the Servers tab at the top of that window.
  • Check the box at the bottom that says "My server requires authentication."
  • Click the "Advanced" tab at the top.
  • Change the Outgoing port from 25 to 587.
  • Click OK at the bottom of that window and Close on the Internet Accounts window.
Instructions for Mozilla Thunderbird
  • Click Tools at the top of Thunderbird, then click Account Settings.
  • At the bottom of the list on the left, click "Outgoing Server (SMTP)", then click Edit on the right.
  • Change the port from 25 to 587.
  • Check the box labeled "Use name and password."
  • Make sure that your username or email address is entered in the box below.
  • Click OK on both of the windows that are open.
